Starting on July 16 and running through July 22, the city of Prayagraj will observe Groundwater Week with a comprehensive Bhujal Sanrakshan Sankalp campaign. This initiative aims to address the critical issue of declining groundwater levels through a coordinated, multi-pronged strategy.
The campaign will involve rejuvenating ponds and check dams, alongside enforcing mandatory rainwater harvesting systems in eligible buildings. The focus extends to promoting water conservation awareness and encouraging community involvement in groundwater recharge efforts.
Significant progress has been made with the completion of 639 Amrit Sarovars, with an additional 76 under construction, collectively enhancing rural groundwater recharge and supporting local livelihoods.
Looking ahead, the Uttar Pradesh Groundwater Department has set a target to install rooftop rainwater harvesting systems on government buildings, expecting to recharge approximately 18,888 cubic metres of water by the 2026-27 financial year.
