Ganga & Yamuna Levels Rise, Prayagraj on Alert
19 Jul
Summary
- Yamuna water level increased by 12 cm in 24 hours.
- Ganga levels rose by 20 cm at Phaphamau and 9 cm at Chhatnag.
- Flood alert issued for low-lying areas along rivers.

Water levels in the Ganga and Yamuna rivers have been steadily increasing in Prayagraj, prompting an alert from the district administration and residents in low-lying areas. As of Saturday, the Yamuna at Naini recorded a level of 73.93 metres, a 12 cm rise over the previous day. The Ganga also saw increases, reaching 77.89 metres at Phaphamau (up 20 cm) and 73.55 metres at Chhatnag (up 9 cm).
These increases are attributed to rainfall in Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh, though a sharp surge is unlikely. Water levels in major Yamuna tributaries like Chambal and Ken have receded, and discharge into the Ganga from Kanpur has also reduced. Rainfall was noted in catchment areas, with Phaphamau recording 38.4 mm on Friday.
The administration has issued a flood alert and directed officials to monitor vulnerable villages. While the situation is reported as under control, residents near the rivers are advised to remain vigilant as the monsoon season continues.
