Zoo Douses Polar Bears in Ice Amid Europe Heatwave
30 Jul
Summary
- Polar bears enjoyed tons of ice to cool down during a heatwave.
- The zoo began providing ice two years ago in response to climate change.
- The Czech Republic recorded its hottest day ever on June 28, 2026.

As Europe faces another intense heatwave, Prague Zoo has implemented an icy solution to provide relief for its animals. Polar bears Aleut and Gregor enthusiastically embraced large quantities of ice cubes in their outdoor enclosure, seeking respite from temperatures expected to soar to 38C.
This initiative, which began two years prior, is a direct response to climate change and the growing frequency of extreme heat days. Zoo spokesperson Filip Masek noted that the ice serves both to cool the animals and enrich their environment. The practice has been a success, with bears adapting well to the European climate.
This year's plan to provide ice in July and August was accelerated due to an early heatwave. The Czech Republic endured its hottest day on record on June 28, 2026, with temperatures reaching 41.9C, a stark reminder of changing weather patterns. Keepers are preparing to adjust their ice provision schedule for future years.
In previous years, other zoo inhabitants like otters, elephants, and parrots have also benefited from ice during hot spells. While some animals naturally tolerate heat or have access to shade and pools, others, like gorillas, have received ice with frozen fruits.
