A remarkable transformation has turned a former landfill into the scenic Port Sunlight River Park on the Wirral Peninsula. Between 1991 and 2006, the site near Liverpool was used for waste disposal. Following its restoration and management by the Land Trust, the park opened in 2014 as an 'oasis of greenery.'
This 70-acre park now features 2.6 miles of paths winding through diverse habitats, attracting wildlife like swans and butterflies. Visitors can enjoy riverside walks, benches with views of Liverpool, and a Heritage Centre with refreshments. The park, recognized in 2015 as 'Most Improved Space of the Year,' is open daily and offers free parking.
