Poole braces for £29.4M flood defense upgrade
27 May
Summary
- Scheme to protect 570 homes in Poole from coastal flooding.
- Artificial sea walls will be raised to counter rising sea levels.
- Project starts Monday, June 1, with completion in autumn 2027.

Work is commencing on a £29.4 million scheme in Poole designed to enhance flood resilience for hundreds of homes.
This vital project will protect 570 properties situated between Poole Bridge and Hunger Hill, addressing the final unprotected section of the town centre's waterfront. The initiative is a major step towards improving flood defenses for current and future residents.
The defenses will feature innovative artificial sea walls, engineered to be raised incrementally. This design allows for adaptation to the challenges posed by climate change and rising sea levels.
The scheme, approved in July 2025, is slated to begin on Monday, June 1. Construction is anticipated to conclude in autumn 2027, with the council predicting that over 2,000 properties will benefit from enhanced protection within the next century.
While the project aims to safeguard the town, residents should anticipate some disruption during the construction phases. The protected area includes part of Holes Bay, an ecologically sensitive zone for migratory birds and marine life.
