A major stopover for migratory birds and a wetland of international importance, Himachal Pradesh's Pong Dam Lake Wildlife Sanctuary is set to receive a fresh eco-tourism push. The Pong Lake Biodiversity Conservation Society (PLBCS) and the District Water Sports & Allied Activities Society, Kangra, have partnered to develop eco-friendly tourism activities and infrastructure within the sanctuary's protected areas.
This collaboration aims to establish Kangra and the Pong Dam Lake as a sustainable eco-tourism destination. Strict adherence to environmental safeguards, including sustainable construction and waste management, is a core component of the agreement. All activities will be closely monitored by the PLBCS to ensure minimal impact on the sensitive ecosystems.
The Pong Dam Lake, a biodiversity-rich wetland created in 1975, spans nearly 24,529 hectares. It was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1983 and a Ramsar Site in 2002, highlighting its national and international ecological significance. The sanctuary is a critical wintering ground for over 100,000 migratory birds from Siberia and Central Asia.
