In Plymouth, volunteers with Clean Our Patch CIC have encountered a wide variety of unusual items during their cleanup efforts. These discoveries include vintage crisp packets from the 1970s, stolen war medals, and even firearms, highlighting the diverse nature of the litter problem.
Some finds, such as a special edition Monster Munch packet from 2001 and a 1960s Brylcreem tin, offer a glimpse into social history and evoke nostalgic memories for many. These items remain remarkably intact, serving as a stark reminder of the long-lasting impact of litter.
The group has also recovered items like a half-body mannequin and, critically, a firearm in 2024 which was promptly handed over to the police. They regularly find knives, with at least one or two discovered each week.
Beyond the cleanup, participating in litter picking has had a profound positive effect on volunteers' mental health and confidence. Many have found it has improved their well-being, encouraging them to seek employment and engage more with nature and their communities.
