Boy Reels In Piranha From Pennsylvania Lake
12 Aug
Summary
- An 8-year-old boy caught a 2lb red-bellied piranha.
- The fish was found in Ridley Park Lake, Pennsylvania.
- Authorities believe it was an illegally released pet.

In a remarkable fishing excursion on Saturday, August 8, an 8-year-old boy named Seamus Coffey caught a 2lb red-bellied piranha from Ridley Park Lake. What began as an assumption of reeling in a bass quickly turned into a unique discovery when Seamus identified the fish, much to his father Michael's surprise.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission later examined the piranha, confirming its species. Officials suspect the fish was a former pet released illegally into the lake. This act is considered both unlawful and detrimental to the native environment and the animal itself.
Commission spokesperson Mike Parker explained that exotic pets are often released when owners can no longer care for them, but this is a harmful decision. The piranha lacked survival skills for the local ecosystem and would not have thrived. Michael Coffey ultimately humanely killed and disposed of the fish, a decision supported by wildlife officials.
