Karnataka Zoo Faces Shutdown Over Animal Neglect Allegations
9 Mar
Summary
- Pilikula Biological Park faces scrutiny over animal conditions.
- Centre will review park's recognition based on welfare allegations.
- Court hearing set for March 25 on PIL concerning park's status.

The Centre has informed the Karnataka High Court that it will evaluate allegations of poor animal welfare and dilapidated enclosures at Mangaluru's Pilikula Biological Park. This review is crucial before the park's recognition as a zoo can be renewed. The submission came during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation filed by Bhuvan M., which details various defects within the park.
The petition highlights serious concerns, including rusted and poorly secured enclosures, some covered with fishing nets. It also alleges violations of minimum enclosure size requirements, insufficient veterinary care, and unhygienic conditions, such as contaminated water. Nitrates were reportedly found in the fodder for herbivores, according to a toxicology report of a deceased animal.
Further allegations include the unauthorized acquisition and release of animals, violating Central Zoo Authority guidelines, and possible involvement in illegal wildlife trade. The recent transfer of park management to the Karnataka Forest Department has also been questioned, with claims that no improvements have been made since the Central Zoo Authority's recommendation.
The Karnataka High Court has granted the government advocate a week to seek instructions, with the next hearing scheduled for March 25. The park's application for an extended zoo recognition is currently pending.
