Summary
- Physical activity can help climate goals and public health.
- Climate change can make outdoor activity unsafe.
- Inequalities persist in global access to active leisure.

Physical activity initiatives, particularly those promoting walking, cycling, and public transport, can simultaneously advance climate mitigation, adaptation, and public health goals. A novel conceptual framework, the 'physical activity and climate change' model, offers a basis for integrated, equitable, and sustainable solutions. Aligning these agendas is presented as more powerful than addressing them independently.
Climate change presents a dual challenge: while active transport can reduce emissions, extreme weather events like heatwaves and flooding can make outdoor environments unsafe or inaccessible, thereby undermining physical activity engagement. Researchers have also identified persistent global inequalities in how people globally engage in physical activity.
Analysis across 68 countries revealed significant disparities, with socially advantaged groups having far greater access to voluntary active leisure compared to less advantaged populations. Conversely, physical activity driven by economic necessity, such as active labor, was found to be more prevalent among disadvantaged groups. National policy assessments indicate limited evidence of implementation despite policy adoption, with a lack of cross-sectoral collaboration being a key barrier.
