Shelter Crisis: 600+ Animals Arrive in a Week!

ACCT Philly is experiencing an unprecedented crisis with over 600 animal arrivals in just over a week, prompting urgent calls for community assistance. The shelter, which is typically at capacity, has seen a significant surge in both stray and surrendered animals. This overwhelming intake has already led to difficult decisions, including the euthanasia of two dogs due to a severe lack of space.

To mitigate the overcrowding and prevent further difficult choices, ACCT Philly is implementing financial incentives for fosters and rescue partners. Donors are funding payments of $200 for dog fosters and $150 for cat and kitten fosters. Additionally, rescue partners receive $750 for each large dog they take in, a measure described as a sign of how dire the situation has become.

The influx includes over 400 cats and kittens and more than 160 dogs, alongside other animals like guinea pigs and wildlife. Officials project they may take in 700 dogs in July alone, a number not seen in a decade, suggesting financial hardship among pet owners may be a contributing factor. To address the crisis, ACCT Philly is waiving adoption fees on weekends throughout August and offering free spay and neuter services in specific Philadelphia ZIP codes.

The shelter continues to rely heavily on community support, seeking more fosters, adopters, and rescue partners. Pet food and medical assistance are also available resources for those struggling to care for their animals. The organization emphasizes the critical need for public help to ensure all animals can find safe and loving homes during this challenging period.
