Philippines Pioneers 24/7 Solar Power with Groundbreaking Facility
18 Oct
Summary
- Philippines' first solar plant providing steady, around-the-clock electricity
- 197MW solar array combined with 320MWh battery storage system
- Facility expected to power 158,000 homes, reduce carbon by 265,000 tons/year

In 2025, the Philippines is making significant progress in harnessing the power of the sun. Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation recently opened a pioneering solar power plant in the province of Batangas, about two hours south of Manila. The CS Batangas 1 facility is the country's first solar power plant capable of providing steady, around-the-clock electricity, even after the sun sets.
The 10 billion Philippine peso (approximately $170 million) plant combines a 197-megawatt solar array with a 320-megawatt-hour battery storage system. This innovative setup allows the facility to store excess solar power generated during the day for use during off-peak hours, enhancing the reliability of solar energy and reducing reliance on the grid.
The plant is expected to supply electricity to roughly 158,000 homes, offering a more affordable and sustainable energy source for Filipino households. Additionally, the project is projected to reduce carbon pollution by 265,000 tons per year, marking a significant step forward in the Philippines' clean energy goals.

Beyond powering homes, the solar farm also supports local agriculture through agrivoltaics, where crops are planted beneath and around the solar panels, maximizing land productivity and food security. This dual-use approach helps address the challenge of land-use competition between energy and agriculture.
