Tiny Tarsiers Found Beyond Known Habitats

The habitat range of the Philippine tarsier, a small nocturnal primate, has been found to be significantly more extensive than previously believed. A recent study identified potential tarsier presence in 29 provinces across the Philippines, more than double the 14 provinces previously recognized by conservation authorities. This expanded understanding was largely facilitated by analyzing over a thousand Facebook posts submitted since 2006.

Researchers found numerous sightings in areas like northern Leyte, suggesting population densities comparable to protected zones on Bohol. The study also highlighted critical conservation challenges, as Facebook posts revealed illegal activities including tarsiers being kept in cages, leashed, or even found dead. Such illegal trafficking, particularly for the pet trade, poses a substantial threat to the species, which is currently listed as 'Near Threatened' by the IUCN.

While efforts to protect tarsiers are underway in popular ecotourism destinations such as Bohol, with measures like noise reduction for visitors, the research indicates these protections are not reaching all vulnerable populations. The researchers aim to expand their study, potentially seeking further student involvement and funding to scale up their innovative social media-based approach to conservation.
