Landfill Fire Continues to Plague Edmonton Residents with Smoke and Stench

As of November 13, 2025, a fire that broke out at a landfill facility on the western edge of Edmonton, Alberta three days earlier is still burning, causing ongoing issues for nearby residents. The blaze began on the evening of November 10th at the GFL Environmental facility, prompting a response from Parkland County fire crews.

While the fire is not threatening any structures or critical infrastructure, it has been producing significant amounts of smoke and foul odors that have been impacting both the city of Edmonton and Parkland County. Authorities have advised local residents to keep their windows and doors closed during periods of poor air quality, and experts have warned of potential health risks from the toxic fumes emanating from the landfill.

The fire is being tackled by specialized industrial firefighters hired by GFL, who are using soil and heavy equipment to try to smother the flames and reduce the spread of smoke. However, officials have stated that the fire is expected to continue burning for some time. Residents in the nearby Secord neighborhood have reported distressing images of thick black smoke billowing into their community, and some have expressed concerns about the impact on a nearby school.
