Periyar River Pollution Tackled: Dyke Wall and Surveillance Road Planned

As of October 24, 2025, the authorities have made significant progress on a project to address pollution in the Periyar River. The plan involves constructing a 1.2-kilometer-long dyke wall (embankment) and a surveillance road along the Eloor-Muppathadam industrial stretch of the river.
The survey work for the project has been completed for around 730 meters of the identified land. The Irrigation Design and Research Board (IDRB) has finalized the design of the dyke wall, and a detailed project report will be prepared once the survey is fully completed.
The project is part of the long-term Periyar River Action Plan, with the Department of Irrigation as the implementing agency. The State Level Monitoring Committee on Solid Waste Management had recommended setting up an inspection walkway along the stretch in 2020 to enhance surveillance against industrial pollution.
Though the project was proposed five years ago, its implementation was delayed due to a lack of funds. However, the mass fish kill incident along the Edayar industrial stretch of the river in May 2024 prompted the authorities to expedite the project's implementation.
