Prince Edward Island Public Safety is issuing a warning to residents about heightened coyote activity as the animals enter their mating season. This period, extending into the pup-rearing phase, often sees coyotes becoming more territorial and defensive. Wildlife biologist Matthew Ginn advises Islanders to keep a close watch on pets, particularly smaller ones, and to avoid letting them roam unsupervised.
Coyote sightings are common across P.E.I., but specific behaviors warrant reporting to the province. These include coyotes frequenting yards or approaching patios, and any signs of aggression such as growling or predatory stances. If an aggressive coyote is encountered, residents should attempt to scare it away by making themselves appear larger and making loud noises, rather than approaching it.
Preventing habituation is crucial. Residents are reminded to secure potential food sources, such as garbage, to prevent coyotes from becoming accustomed to human proximity. This indirect feeding can lead to further problems. P.E.I. maintains a fur-harvesting season for coyotes from October 1 to March 31.
