Patna Zoo Welcomes Exotic Animals in Major Exchange

The Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, commonly known as Patna zoo, is undergoing a significant transformation with the upcoming arrival of diverse endemic and exotic animals via a major exchange program. This initiative, coordinated by the Central Zoo Authority of India, involves collaborations with the National Zoological Park in Delhi and the Rohtak zoo.

The primary objective of these animal exchanges is to enhance the genetic diversity within the zoo's populations, prevent inbreeding, and strengthen captive breeding programs for the long-term conservation of various wildlife species.

Patna zoo is slated to receive a white tigress, a highly anticipated attraction, along with sangai deer, white blackbucks, rosy pelicans, painted storks, and a white heron from the Delhi zoo. In return, Patna zoo will send Indian antelopes to Delhi.

Furthermore, Patna zoo will transfer a male tiger, gharials, grey wolves, common snakes, and barn owls to Delhi. Separately, a pair of wolves will be sent to the Rohtak zoo, with Patna zoo receiving two green iguanas and two silver pheasants in return, enriching its reptile and bird exhibits.

Officials anticipate the arrival of the new animals by April 20, with a mandatory 30-day quarantine period preceding their public display. These exchanges are crucial for maintaining healthy bloodlines and adhering to national wildlife management standards, with the new inhabitants expected to draw substantial visitor interest.
