Sewer Work Closes Parkland Roads for Two Weeks
17 Jun
Summary
- Ainsworth Ave South in Parkland faces two weeks of sewer construction.
- A significant sewer interceptor upgrade is underway to increase capacity.
- New pipes will use corrosion-resistant materials to prevent future damage.

Starting Wednesday, sections of Ainsworth Avenue South in the Parkland area will experience significant traffic impacts for approximately two weeks due to sewer construction. Through traffic will be prohibited between 116th Street South and Garfield Street South, though residents and emergency vehicles will be permitted. The segment from Garfield Street South to Tule Lake Road South will be completely closed.
This work is a preparatory step for Phase 5 of the Parkland/Brookdale Sewer Interceptor project, which will install about 200 feet of a 72-inch pipe. This extensive project aims to increase wastewater collection capacity and replace original pipelines from the 1980s that have degraded due to corrosion. The new pipeline will be constructed from durable, corrosion-resistant materials like high-density polyethylene.
Phase 5 involves installing a new 72-inch interceptor pipeline across properties of the Franklin Pierce School District and Pacific Lutheran University, with further construction extending to Washington High School and Keithley Middle School by November. This phase alone is estimated to cost $13 million. Future phases, including Phase 6 projected for summer 2028, are planned to further integrate the new system with existing infrastructure, ensuring a robust wastewater collection system for east Pierce County.
