Pandikot Pallam, a wetland in Nileshwaram municipality renowned for its rich biodiversity, is slated for declaration as a local biodiversity heritage site. This initiative aims to preserve the area's unique flora in its natural condition, safeguarding it from development and waste dumping. The Municipal Biodiversity Management Committee is spearheading the process with assistance from the Kerala State Biodiversity Board.
The wetland is notably home to Krishnakesara bispinosa, an extremely rare plant species documented nowhere else globally. Two other rare species, Rotala tulunadensis and Blyxa kasargodensis, have also been identified within Pandikot Pallam, underscoring its ecological significance. Conservation efforts have commenced, including the installation of fencing to deter waste disposal and protect the habitat.
This declaration will grant Pandikot Pallam legal protection, preventing alterations inconsistent with conservation goals. Researchers from institutions like the Malabar Botanical Garden have expressed interest in studying the site. The municipality intends to facilitate further scientific documentation of its valuable biodiversity.
