The Pacific Ocean is currently a hotspot for tropical storm activity, with a developing disturbance expected to potentially impact Hawaii later this week, possibly as a hurricane. Three distinct areas in the tropical Atlantic have been identified by the National Hurricane Center as having potential for tropical cyclone formation, though none pose an immediate threat to land.
One system, south of the Cabo Verde Islands, has a 60% chance of developing into a tropical depression by midweek, potentially heading towards the northeast Caribbean. Another disturbance is forecast to move harmlessly towards the Windward Islands, and a third system in the open Atlantic is rapidly moving east and poses no threat. Meanwhile, a large area of convection east-southeast of Hawaii has a 90% chance of developing into Tropical Storm Lala, with one forecast model suggesting it could near the Big Island as a hurricane by August 14th.
The significant difference in storm activity between the two oceans is largely attributed to El Niño, a warming of Pacific seawater. This event typically boosts Pacific hurricane seasons by warming ocean waters and decreasing wind shear. Conversely, El Niño usually suppresses Atlantic hurricane activity by increasing wind shear and dry air, making storm formation and strengthening more difficult. The current El Niño is on track to be one of the strongest on record, with its influence already strongly imprinted on this season's patterns, evidenced by historically high wind shear in the Atlantic.
