PA Tackles Wildlife Crashes with New Agency Group

The state's Department of Transportation (PennDOT) received an $840,000 federal grant to aid in developing a comprehensive strategic plan for wildlife crossings. This initiative addresses Pennsylvania's position as fifth in the nation for wildlife-vehicle collisions, a persistent issue highlighted by numerous accidents.
Recent data indicates that deer-related crashes between 2021 and 2025 resulted in 78 fatalities and 2,913 injuries. In the year ending June 30, 2024, Pennsylvania recorded over 150,000 auto insurance claims for wildlife-vehicle collisions, the highest in the nation.
Co-led by PennDOT and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), the Pennsylvania Wildlife Connectivity Work Group will develop a unified statewide strategy. This effort seeks to enhance public land safety, protect wildlife habitats, and ensure infrastructure projects align with conservation and community needs.
Wildlife advocates have lauded the initiative, emphasizing the need for a cohesive approach to fragmented habitats and wildlife corridors. The group's formation is expected to accelerate the development of safe animal passageways, thereby reversing the high collision rates and improving ecosystem health.
