Miracle Rescue: Great Horned Owl Saved From Fence
17 Oct
Summary
- Couple freed owl entangled in barbed wire fence.
- Veterinarian treated wing; no broken bones found.
- Rehabilitation center calls survival 'first in 16 years'.

A great horned owl was recently rescued from a barbed wire fence in South Dakota after being discovered by a couple, Scott and Sharon Jacobs. The bird's wing was tangled and pierced by the wire. The Jacobses, known for helping injured wildlife, carefully freed the owl with the help of a passerby and the property owner.
After contacting their veterinarian, the owl was treated for the barbed wire injury, with no broken bones detected. The bird was then transferred to the Black Hills Raptor Center for further rehabilitation. Staff there noted the rarity of such a survival, stating it was the first time in 16 years they had an owl caught in a fence with a chance of recovery.
The owl is now recovering well, showing a desire to fly, and is expected to be released near where it was found. The Jacobses, who believe a similar owl may have saved Sharon's life years ago, are eagerly awaiting its return to the wild.
