Orphaned Elephant Calf Fights for Survival in Nigeria

A months-old orphaned forest elephant calf, Agbaibor, is currently under intensive care at Nigeria's Okomu National Park. Rescued after wandering away from its herd near a palm oil plantation, the calf requires specialized round-the-clock feeding and monitoring by caretakers. This effort is part of a critical conservation initiative for the critically endangered forest elephant population.

Forest elephants are significantly threatened by habitat loss and poaching, with estimates suggesting only about 200 remain in Nigeria. Okomu National Park, one of the country's last remaining rainforest ecosystems, is home to roughly 40 of these elephants. The park faces increasing pressure from logging, farming, and human settlements, which fragment vital elephant corridors.

The emergency effort to nurse Agbaibor involves flying in rehabilitation specialists and providing a milk formula diet, costing between four and five million naira monthly. Conservationists anticipate the calf's rehabilitation will take another three to five years. Plans are underway to build a new enclosure deeper within the park to facilitate gradual integration with wild herds before eventual reintroduction.

Conservation groups emphasize the importance of engaging local communities to protect endangered wildlife. Efforts, including a ranger program and biomonitoring using camera traps, aim to reduce poaching and illegal logging. These initiatives are crucial for preserving the remaining elephant population and their fragile ecosystem.
