A recent study conducted over five months between February and June 2025 documented a total of 81 animal deaths across 19 different species on the Doddabetta road. While common species like Indian toads and Horsfield's spiny lizards were most frequently affected, the study also recorded casualties among endangered species, including the variable ghat frog and the Nilgiri laughingthrush.
Conservationists stress the urgent need for increased awareness among road users. They advocate for adherence to speed limits and suggest that forest and highway departments collaborate on campaigns to inform drivers about the rich biodiversity present, such as Nilgiri martens and endemic species, along these vulnerable stretches to mitigate further wildlife loss.
