Oman Coast Oil Spill: Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker Leaks Oil

Oman is confronting a potential environmental disaster as an oil tanker, reportedly part of Russia's shadow fleet, leaks a substantial volume of crude oil. The spill is spreading across hundreds of square kilometers near the al-Qibliyyah island nature reserve, located off Oman's southern coast.

Satellite imagery reviewed by AFP shows the oil slick expanding significantly, from an estimated 20 square kilometers on July 24 to approximately 600 square kilometers by August 4. This expansion poses a severe and long-lasting threat to the marine ecosystem, including coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and habitats for endangered sea turtles and whales.

The vessel, identified as the Caroline Bezengi, loaded one million barrels of crude oil in Russia on May 11 and has been stranded for over a month. Maritime security firms reported explosions on the ship in June, which reportedly caused flooding and rendered its main engine and steering inoperable. The cause of these blasts is currently unknown.

Environmental organizations warn that a complete break-up of the ship could lead to a regional catastrophe, jeopardizing fishing communities and marine biodiversity. The International Maritime Organization has stated it is offering assistance to Oman, underscoring the urgency of timely intervention to salvage the tanker and prevent further environmental damage.
