Olympian Swims Through Polluted UK Lakes to Raise Awareness

In 2025, Hector Pardoe, a world bronze medallist in open water swimming, took on a remarkable challenge to raise awareness about water pollution in the UK. Pardoe swam a total of 55km across three of the largest lakes in the country - Loch Lomond, Lake Windermere, and Llyn Tegid - in a single 24-hour period, a feat that had never been accomplished before.

The challenge was not without its risks. Pardoe had to contend with issues like sewage spills and poor water quality, which have become increasingly common in UK waterways. According to the Environment Agency, raw sewage was discharged into England's rivers and seas for a record 3.6 million hours in 2024. Pardoe took precautions like using a water quality sensor and antibiotics, but he acknowledged that the conditions were "filthy" and could have made any other swimmer or child very ill.

Despite the challenges, Pardoe was determined to use his platform to raise awareness and advocate for change. He had been recognized at the BBC Green Sport Awards the previous year, and this latest challenge was an opportunity to amplify his message and inspire others to take action. Pardoe's YouTube documentary of the challenge has already garnered over 175,000 views, demonstrating the power of his efforts to bring attention to the pressing issue of water pollution.

Pardoe's commitment to the cause extends beyond his own achievements. He has forged genuine connections with organizations like Surfers Against Sewage, a UK charity that campaigns for cleaner oceans, lakes, and rivers.
