Olive Ridleys Arrive: Mass Nesting Expected Soon
16 Dec
Summary
- Mass nesting of Olive Ridley turtles is predicted for February.
- Over 9.04 lakh turtles laid eggs last year during mass nesting.
- Patrolling intensified to protect turtles from poachers.

The Rushikulya River rookery is abuzz with the anticipated arrival of Olive Ridley turtles for their annual mass nesting. Forest officials expect a significant turnout, with mass nesting predicted for the third week of February. This follows a record-breaking season last year, which saw over 9.04 lakh turtles lay eggs.
To ensure the safety of the nesting turtles, patrolling efforts have been significantly increased. This proactive measure aims to deter poachers who pose a threat to the turtles during this crucial mating and nesting period. In line with protective measures, two fishing trawlers from Andhra Pradesh were apprehended for illegal fishing activities.
The government has imposed a fishing ban for mechanized trawlers within 20 km of the coast from November 1 to May 31, coinciding with the turtles' congregation for mass nesting. The forest department is collaborating with local fishermen, seeking their cooperation and discussing compensation during the fishing ban.
