28 Apr
Summary
- Odisha plans to reuse 50% of used water by 2036.
- 100% collection, treatment of used water by 2030 is a target.
- Policy promotes reuse in municipal, industrial, and agricultural sectors.

Odisha is implementing a new policy to significantly increase the reuse of treated used water, targeting a minimum of 50% by 2036, marking the state's centenary.
The Policy on Reuse of Treated Used Water of Urban Odisha, 2026, aims for comprehensive used water management. Key targets include achieving 100% collection, conveyance, and treatment of used water in all urban local bodies by 2030. By the same year, at least 20% of treated water is slated for reuse, scaling up to 50% by 2036.
Currently, Odisha generates about 1,104 MLD of used water, with only 190 MLD treated. The new policy mandates treatment and adherence to safety standards for non-potable uses. Treated water will be utilized for municipal services like road cleaning and firefighting, and industrial applications such as cooling and construction.
To encourage uptake, the government is introducing a tiered tariff model, pricing treated water below potable water. Additional incentives include water credits for farmers and Viability Gap Funding for industries. Cities with operational sewage treatment plants must achieve 20% reuse within six months of the policy notification.
