Odisha Zoo Plans Cheetah Arrival from Abroad
17 Feb
Summary
- Odisha's Nandankanan Zoo plans to import cheetahs.
- A private party will select a foreign zoo and handle transport.
- Odisha will also receive red kangaroos from Australia.

Nandankanan Zoo in Odisha is set to become home to cheetahs, a species not currently available at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. The zoo has initiated plans to import cheetahs from abroad.
To facilitate this ambitious project, the zoo is seeking a private party through a tender process. This selected entity will be responsible for identifying an appropriate zoo internationally, likely in South Africa, and managing the complex logistics of transporting a male and female pair of cheetahs.
Further government approval and funding are pending, though patronage is expected to help cover costs. The zoo is preparing suitable enclosures and an environment conducive to the cheetahs' needs, recognizing their requirement for open, meadow-rich land.
In addition to cheetahs, Nandankanan Zoo is also preparing to welcome two pairs of red kangaroos from Australia. A new 'Australian Adventures' zone is being developed with modern enclosures designed to mimic arid grassland and woodland ecosystems for these and other Australian fauna.
