Summary
- Tigress Zeenat, relocated from Maharashtra, birthed four cubs in Similipal.
- The cubs' arrival enhances genetic diversity in Odisha's tiger population.
- Zeenat's earlier journey involved straying into other states before capture.

Tigress Zeenat, brought from Maharashtra, has successfully given birth to four cubs within Odisha's Similipal Tiger Reserve. This event marks a significant success for the state's wildlife conservation efforts and aims to enhance the genetic diversity of its tiger population. The cubs' arrival was announced by Chief Minister Mohan Majhi on June 2, 2026, highlighting the favorable environment at Similipal.
Zeenat's journey to Similipal began in 2025. After an initial acclimatization period, she ventured into Jharkhand and West Bengal, leading to an alert across three states. She was tranquilized and captured in West Bengal on December 29, 2025, and subsequently returned to Similipal following a medical examination and directives from the National Tiger Conservation Authority.
To improve genetic diversity, Zeenat and another tigress, Jamuna, were released into a soft enclosure in Similipal, a region known for tigers with pronounced black stripes due to inbreeding. The state government had previously planned to introduce six pairs of tigers from other states, making Zeenat's successful birth of four cubs particularly important after a prior failed reintroduction experiment in Satkosia Tiger Reserve.
