A week-long coastal cleanup campaign, "Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar," was launched on Saturday at Gopalpur-on-Sea in Ganjam district, Odisha. This initiative by the ministry of earth science aims to prepare for International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19. The campaign was inaugurated by Additional Chief Secretary Chitra Arumugam, who emphasized the importance of protecting beaches for life and livelihood.
The drive saw participation from local residents, students from Berhampur University, IISER Berhampur, and Gopalpur College. Rallies and competitions are planned to foster awareness about marine conservation. Ganjam district, with its 62.9km stretch of Odisha's 575km coastline, plays a crucial role in this endeavor.
Furthermore, the campaign supports the state government's focus on developing the blue economy. The Odisha Marine Biotechnology Research & Innovation Corridor (Ombric) is fostering collaboration with educational institutions to advance marine biodiversity mapping and research, benefiting the fishing communities.
