Ocelot Rio Turns 27: A Record-Breaking Feline Birthday

Rio, an ocelot, is set to celebrate her 27th birthday on May 28th, marking an extraordinary milestone. She holds the distinction of being the oldest ocelot currently living in human care, a significant achievement for a species with a shorter typical lifespan in captivity.

Rio now resides at The Wildcat Sanctuary in Minnesota, where she enjoys a peaceful retirement. She arrived in late 2024 after a facility in Texas closed. Previously part of a breeding program, she spent decades in captivity before finding refuge at the accredited sanctuary.

Despite her advanced age, Rio remains active and engaged with her environment. Her caretakers note she still enjoys enrichment activities and exploring her habitat, confidently climbing platforms and resting in hammocks. This demonstrates that with proper lifelong care, wild animals can continue to thrive into their senior years.

Ocelots, native to Central and South America and parts of South Texas, are elusive wild cats admired for their spotted coats. However, their beauty fuels the exotic pet trade, a concern for The Wildcat Sanctuary. They emphasize the extensive specialized care required and the frequent neglect or abandonment of these animals when they become unmanageable.

The Wildcat Sanctuary provides lifelong refuge for over 150 wild cats rescued from exploitative situations. The sanctuary, which is not open to the public, prioritizes the natural habitats and well-being of its residents. Rio's birthday celebration will include species-appropriate enrichment and special treats, with supporters following online.
