Council Fridge Pickups Suspended: National Disposal Crisis
4 Aug
Summary
- Fridge and freezer collections are suspended for four weeks initially.
- National shortage of disposal site capacity is the primary cause.
- Residents are asked to store appliances safely at home.

Fridge and freezer waste collections in Nottinghamshire have been suspended for an initial period of four weeks, commencing on August 10. This decision stems from a national scarcity of available space at disposal sites, a situation affecting councils across the country. The Nottinghamshire County Council spokesperson emphasized that this measure was taken only when necessary and that they had delayed requesting a suspension longer than many other local authorities.
Residents are being advised to safely store their old appliances at home until collections can resume. The council stated it will work to reinstate the service as soon as adequate disposal capacity becomes available. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) is reportedly collaborating with various stakeholders to address the treatment capacity shortages. Fridges and freezers require specialized dismantling due to their potentially environmentally harmful gases.
