Noida Society's Sewage Dumped Untreated!
28 Oct
Summary
- Untreated sewage discharged into a drain, bypassing STP.
- Water department documented findings on video, flagged NGT violation.
- Health risks include gastrointestinal infections from polluted water.
A Noida housing society, Paramount Floraville in Sector 137, is under scrutiny following an inspection on October 14 by the Noida authority's water department. The inspection allegedly found that untreated sewage was being discharged into a drain, bypassing the society's sewage treatment plant (STP).
The water department documented the alleged violation with video evidence and subsequently wrote to the Noida authority's environment cell on October 15. The letter highlighted the bypass as a violation of National Green Tribunal (NGT) norms, citing environmental pollution due to the direct discharge of sewage.
Officials are now questioning the oversight and functionality of STPs in group housing societies. The Paramount Floraville society comprises 14 towers with approximately 1,200 occupied flats. The water department has directed its officials to conduct periodic inspections of STPs in their jurisdiction to prevent untreated sewage discharge into drains.
Health experts warn that untreated sewage can transmit disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and parasites, posing risks of gastrointestinal infections like diarrhea, typhoid, and hepatitis, particularly if drinking water sources become contaminated.
