Noida Sewage Crisis: Pollution to Flow Until 2027-28
5 Feb
Summary
- Noida Authority admits sewage interception will take until 2027-28.
- NGT banned sewage discharge into natural drains over two years ago.
- Eight STPs treat 411 MLD, exceeding Noida's 240 MLD sewage generation.

More than two years after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) prohibited discharging sewage into natural drains, the Noida Authority has indicated to the Supreme Court that the full interception and treatment of polluting drains will extend to 2027-28. This timeline was presented in a civil appeal filed in February 2026.
The NGT had issued a blanket ban on August 3, 2022, mandating that sewage be diverted to Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) instead of natural water bodies. NEERI identified 24 drains contributing to the pollution of the Kondli irrigation canal.
