Noida Sewage Crisis: Pollution to Flow Until 2027-28

More than two years after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) prohibited discharging sewage into natural drains, the Noida Authority has indicated to the Supreme Court that the full interception and treatment of polluting drains will extend to 2027-28. This timeline was presented in a civil appeal filed in February 2026.
The NGT had issued a blanket ban on August 3, 2022, mandating that sewage be diverted to Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) instead of natural water bodies. NEERI identified 24 drains contributing to the pollution of the Kondli irrigation canal.
While some drains have been diverted to existing STPs or pumping stations, others are in various stages of planning and execution, with completion dates spread over the next three years. Noida possesses eight operational STPs with a combined capacity of 411 million litres per day (MLD), which exceeds the city's estimated sewage generation of 240 MLD.
Despite adequate treatment capacity, the authority concedes that untreated or partially treated wastewater continues to enter natural drains, signifying an ongoing environmental concern within the city.
