For the past three consecutive days, the average air quality index (AQI) in Noida has remained in the "very poor" category, reaching as high as 372 in Sector 125. The situation is similarly dire in Ghaziabad, where the AQI has also been in the "very poor" range for the last three days, with the Loni station recording an alarming AQI of 383.
Pollution control authorities have acknowledged the severity of the problem and are taking steps to address it. Special teams have been deployed for night patrols in industrial areas, and enforcement action has been taken against 10 factories in Loni, Ghaziabad, for using wood as fuel. Officials are closely monitoring the AQI levels and implementing corrective measures, but the region's air quality is expected to deteriorate further as winter sets in, bringing colder temperatures, shallow fog, and decreased wind speeds that trap pollutants.
Experts warn that the combination of pollutants and fog will lead to the formation of smog, which is likely to accumulate in the coming months. A western disturbance expected on November 5 may provide temporary relief, but the northerly winds that follow will usher in colder conditions that could exacerbate the pollution crisis in Noida and Ghaziabad.
