NGT Summons DC Over Waste Crisis
11 Sep
Summary
- NGT summons Sangrur deputy commissioner for waste management failures.
- An unpaid environmental fine of ₹84 lakh remains outstanding.
- Dumpsite operated without mandatory environmental permissions.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has summoned the Sangrur deputy commissioner to appear on November 18 regarding ongoing waste management issues and an outstanding ₹84 lakh environmental fine. The tribunal expressed dissatisfaction with the district administration's compliance failures concerning the local dumpsite.
An application highlighted issues like untreated legacy waste, street litter, and open garbage burning. The NGT also took exception to the municipal council's delayed remediation of 15,961 tonnes of legacy waste. Initially promised for September 30, 2026, the council requested an extension due to monsoons, a justification the NGT rejected.
Further scrutiny revealed the Sangrur dumpsite lacked essential establishment and operation permissions from the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB). The PPCB had imposed an ₹84 lakh fine for violations between July 2020 and March 2024, which remains unpaid. The NGT emphasized the district administration's statutory responsibility for ensuring compliance.
