State Govt Faces NGT Action Over Single-Use Plastics
2 Oct
Summary
- NGT approached over alleged banned plastic use at state event.
- Petitioners cite photographic evidence of prohibited plastic items.
- PAC seeks environmental compensation from the state government.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is being petitioned by the Public Action Committee (PAC) concerning the alleged use of banned single-use plastic items. This alleged violation occurred during a state government event, Jashan-E-Inquilab, held at Punjab Agricultural University on September 28. The PAC has submitted photographic evidence to the tribunal.
Members of the PAC highlighted that the government's own programs should adhere to environmental laws, including the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016. These rules prohibit the use of various single-use plastic items like cups, plates, and cutlery.
The petition also urged the NGT to impose environmental compensation on the state government. Furthermore, it requested directives for the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) to provide a detailed report on the compliance with plastic waste management regulations.
