NGT questions Haryana on drain contamination
10 Dec
Summary
- Sewage from Haryana's DD-6 is spilling into DD-8, a key drinking water source.
- The National Green Tribunal is investigating the contamination risk to Delhi's water.
- A breach in a separation wall between drains caused the critical mixing of waste.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is scrutinizing potential contamination of a crucial drain supplying drinking water to Delhi. Concerns have surfaced regarding sewage from Haryana's Diversion Drain No. 6 (DD-6) spilling into Diversion Drain No. 8 (DD-8), a vital freshwater source for the capital. This potential pollution poses a significant environmental and public health threat.
The tribunal learned that DD-6 receives substantial sewage, and despite existing treatment capacities, untreated waste continues to enter the drains. A recent report confirmed that DD-8 is indeed a freshwater drain, while DD-6 is not. The critical issue was a breach in the separation wall between the two drains downstream of Akbarpur Barota, allowing effluent to mix.
