NGT Expands Probe into Delhi Water Contamination
11 Jul
Summary
- Delhi government and DPCC now parties to NGT's uranium probe.
- Over 24 of 83 groundwater samples in Delhi exceeded uranium limits.
- Northwestern India, including Delhi, is a uranium contamination hotspot.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has broadened its ongoing suo motu proceedings concerning uranium contamination. The tribunal has now included the Delhi government and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) as additional respondents in the case. This expansion comes after the NGT reviewed a report highlighting significant uranium levels found in the groundwater of the nation's capital.
This development stems from a news report initially focusing on uranium detected in Bihar. However, the NGT also took judicial notice of a separate report detailing groundwater contamination within Delhi. This latter report, referencing the Central Ground Water Board's 2025 findings, indicated that 24 out of 83 collected groundwater samples surpassed the permissible uranium limits. The NGT has scheduled the next hearing for September 24, 2026, to further address these critical environmental concerns.
