NGT Acts on Delhi Ecological Hazard Site
13 Feb
Summary
- NGT investigates environmental violations at Delhi's Central Square Complex.
- Site allegedly contains untreated sewage and illegal tree felling.
- A hearing is scheduled for May 20, with a site inspection ordered.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has initiated proceedings regarding alleged environmental violations at the Central Square Complex in Delhi's Bara Hindu Rao area. An application submitted to the tribunal claims the complex has transformed into a significant ecological hazard within the city.
The petitioner alleges that an excavated crater at the site is collecting untreated sewage and polluted runoff, creating stagnant, toxic water. Further claims include the expiration of the project's environmental clearance, illegal tree felling, unauthorized borewell operations, and a failure to implement mandatory safety measures like proper barricading and warning signs around the hazardous excavation.
Recognizing the gravity of the concerns, the NGT bench, led by chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, acknowledged that the issues raised involve substantial environmental compliance and public safety risks. The tribunal has requested all respondents to submit their responses and has ordered the petitioner to serve copies of the application to all involved parties. Additionally, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee has been tasked with inspecting the site, assessing compliance with environmental norms, and taking necessary actions. The next hearing for this case is scheduled for May 20.
