NGT's Wetland Mitra: A Boost for Conservation Efforts
6 Feb
Summary
- Chhattisgarh's 'Wetland Mitra' initiative is praised for wetland protection.
- NGT directs MP and Rajasthan to report on wetland status.
- Encroachment and pollution control measures are mandated for water bodies.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has lauded Chhattisgarh's "Wetland Mitra" initiative, a program designed to foster direct community involvement in wetland conservation. This concept, which provides first-hand information on wetland status and the implementation of conservation rules, has been deemed highly beneficial for protecting these vital water bodies.
Consequently, the NGT has directed the State Wetland Authorities of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to provide detailed status reports on their respective wetlands. The tribunal specifically ordered the erection of boundary pillars, demarcation, and protection of water bodies to prevent encroachment and the discharge of untreated wastewater.
The NGT also mandated the removal of any existing encroachments following due legal process. Furthermore, state pollution control boards are instructed to take strict legal action against any violations, including prosecution and recovery of environmental compensation.
