NGT Cracks Down on Punjab's Dirty Generators
19 Apr
Summary
- NGT orders new inspection of diesel generator sets in Punjab.
- Many generator sets violate emission standards and lack permits.
- Report on compliance with GSR 804(E), 2022 standards is required.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has expressed serious concern over diesel generator (DG) sets in Punjab. It has directed the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) to conduct a new, targeted inspection and submit a comprehensive report within eight weeks. This directive stems from a news report highlighting the substantial role of unregulated generator emissions in the state's air pollution.
During a recent hearing, the PPCB reported that out of 1,323 inspected units, 1,129 were compliant, but 156 operated without valid consent and 181 violated emission standards. The NGT noted that the PPCB's initial submission did not confirm checks against the primary regulatory benchmark, GSR 804(E), 2022.
Consequently, the NGT mandated a fresh inspection focusing specifically on adherence to the GSR 804(E), 2022 norms. A PPCB official stated that instructions for this inspection would be issued soon to ensure compliance with the NGT's orders. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on July 21.
