The National Green Tribunal's (NGT) eastern bench has mandated a comprehensive investigation into accusations of illegal sand mining and environmental rule breaches. The inquiry focuses on a sand quarry situated on the Rushikulya river in Ganjam district, following a petition filed on May 26. The petitioners highlighted alleged irregularities at the Bhimpur sand bed, which spans 10.425 acres. They seek the cancellation of environmental clearances and business permits for the private lessee, alongside criminal action and recovery of environmental compensation.
In response, the NGT formed a committee comprising representatives from the Central Pollution Control Board, Odisha State Pollution Control Board, and the Ganjam administration. This panel is tasked with visiting the site, scrutinizing the allegations, engaging with stakeholders, and proposing solutions within one month. The district magistrate of Ganjam will coordinate these efforts. The NGT also issued notices to several key state officials and agencies, demanding their responses by July 23.
