NGT Scolds Rajasthan Over Illegal River Mining
22 Apr
Summary
- NGT orders probe into illegal sand mining in Khari and Mansi rivers.
- Authorities face warnings for continued environmental damage.
- A joint committee will investigate and submit a factual report.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into alleged large-scale illegal sand mining and its detrimental impact on the Khari and Mansi rivers in Rajasthan. A bench, noting the substantial environmental concerns, has directed a joint committee, including representatives from the Bhilwara district administration and the Rajasthan Pollution Control Board, to conduct a site visit.
This committee is tasked with submitting a factual and action-taken report. The NGT has sternly warned authorities, stating that if illegal mining is confirmed, the district collector must halt operations immediately, initiate legal proceedings, and recover environmental compensation. The matter is slated for further hearing on July 20, 2026.
The Khari and Mansi rivers, vital lifelines for agrarian communities in Bhilwara, Shahpura, and Kekri, are reportedly suffering from rampant illegal sand mining. Allegations include mining beyond permitted areas and unauthorized installations, disrupting the ecological balance, damaging riverbeds, and affecting groundwater levels and agricultural productivity.
