NGT Cracks Down on Delhi's Illegal Borewells
23 Feb
Summary
- NGT orders permanent sealing of unauthorized borewells in Delhi.
- Previous sealing efforts were found to be ineffective by NGT.
- Authorities to remove pumps and use concrete to plug borewells.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered authorities to ensure the permanent and effective sealing of illegal borewells operating in Delhi. This directive comes after the tribunal found that earlier sealing efforts had been insufficient, allowing for continued groundwater extraction. The NGT's order, issued on February 20, stems from a petition filed by a Rohini resident highlighting unauthorized borewells in several areas, including Sector 7, Rohini, and Prem Nagar and Shakti Nagar.
During a recent hearing, counsel for the sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) indicated that borewells had been sealed between December 2025 and February 2026. However, the tribunal observed photographic evidence suggesting the sealing was inadequate and did not prevent operation. In response, the SDM for Model Town committed to a more robust sealing method, involving the removal of submersible pumps and plugging with concrete, to be completed within two weeks. A compliance report is expected within three weeks, with the next hearing scheduled for April 1.
