NGT Demands Yamuna Floodplain Demarcation Meeting
21 Jul
Summary
- NGT ordered a joint meeting to resolve Yamuna floodplain demarcation.
- A dispute over a revised map halted boundary bollard installation.
- Officials must explain the timing of the revised demarcation map.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has mandated that the Delhi government convene a joint meeting of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the irrigation and flood control department (IF&C) within seven days. This directive aims to settle issues impeding the demarcation of the Yamuna floodplains in Delhi.
The core of the dispute lies in the demarcation of a 22-km section of the Yamuna floodplains. The DDA had commenced installing boundary bollards, with 206 of 277 already fixed, expecting completion by July 31. However, the IF&C department submitted a revised demarcation map on June 6, causing the DDA to suspend work and consider relocating previously installed bollards.
The tribunal expressed concern over the timing of the revised map, demanding an explanation from the IF&C department for altering the plan mid-exercise. The NGT has requested a new progress report from the DDA and an affidavit from the IF&C department ahead of the next hearing on September 18, 2026.
