NGT Pushes Delhi Ridge Protection Board into Action
21 May
Summary
- NGT ordered the Delhi Ridge Management Board to be constituted and commence duties.
- The board, granted statutory powers by the Supreme Court last year, lacks two civil society members.
- The Ministry of Environment reconstituted the board in December 2025, replacing the 1995 body.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued a directive for the Delhi Ridge Management Board to be constituted and actively pursue its responsibilities. This board was granted statutory powers by the Supreme Court in November 2025, a significant upgrade from its previous iteration formed in 1995. The Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEF&CC) officially reconstituted the board in December 2025.
However, the operationalization of the board has been stalled because the Delhi forest department has not yet appointed two required members from civil society. Consequently, no board meetings have taken place since July 2025. The NGT has clubbed several cases related to the protection of Delhi's ridges and seeks progress reports on the phase-II notification for the Southern Ridge.
