NGT Slams Odisha Over Similipal Reserve Neglect
15 Mar
Summary
- NGT issued notices over inaction on Similipal eco-sensitive zone.
- Allegations include unregulated construction and waste dumping.
- Final notification for the zone remains pending for over six years.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken note of alleged inaction by the Odisha government and central environmental bodies concerning the Similipal Tiger Reserve. A petition filed by an NGO highlighted significant environmental concerns, including unregulated construction, tree felling, and plastic waste dumping within the proposed eco-sensitive zone (ESZ).
Taking cognisance of these serious allegations, the NGT's East Zone Bench has issued notices to key state and central authorities. These include the Odisha Chief Secretary, the Additional Chief Secretary of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, and various officials from the Similipal Tiger Reserve and regional MoEFCC offices.
The petition stated that while a draft notification for the ESZ was released in January 2019, the final notification has still not been issued after more than six years. This delay has reportedly led to unchecked activities in violation of Union environment ministry guidelines.
Similipal Tiger Reserve, a UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 2009, is crucial for biodiversity, supporting large populations of elephants and tigers. The NGT has requested replies from the respondents within one month, with the next hearing scheduled for April 30, 2026.
